Congratulations to Simran, recipient of the 2025 Bernard Henry AIMCAL-SVC Scholarship. Simran has an M.Sc. from Simon Fraser University and is working on a PhD in Materials Science at McMaster University. Simran says, “My academic research is based on diamond-like carbon (DLC) deposition using a vacuum coating technique on chalcogenide substrates. I use plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to deposit DLC. The unique composition, where diamond-like (sp3) and graphite-like (sp2) components blend, enhances mechanical, tribological, and optical properties. DLC films can be tuned to required applications by governing the sp2 /sp3 ratio and hydrogen content. This is advantageous for making them compatible with various applications such as protective coatings on automobile components, aerospace components, military and defense equipment, cutting tools, biomedical implants, and electronic components.”

Simran says, “Receiving this scholarship is an incredible honor and a tremendous support for my academic journey. I am deeply grateful for this scholarship and look forward to making the most of this opportunity.”
