Swetapadma says “I am a PhD student in Electrical Engineering in University of Illinois, working under the guidance of Prof. Simeon Bogdanov. I focus on making new platforms for integrated quantum photonics. In my research I am developing epitaxial films with low optical losses that can be used for making efficient nanophotonic platforms. I grow films using a magnetron sputter coater in high vacuum conditions and characterize them using Woollam ellipsometers to continually understand how the parameters of deposition affect the film properties. The ultimate goal is to use these low-loss films in fabricating scalable and efficient integrated photonic platforms for quantum information sciences.”
She continues “I sincerely thank the SVC Foundation for awarding J.A. Woollam Company Scholarship to me. I am really honored to receive the scholarship. As a frequent user of vacuum coating and characterization technologies, I have great respect and admiration for the support provided by SVC Foundation members to graduate students like us. This fantastic recognition motivates me to keep working harder towards discovering new science and making significant contributions to the community.”
